Posy Ring

ll trittico si rifà agli antichi anelli cosiddetti “posy” che a gruppi di due o tre si regalavano agli amici o agli amanti in segno di fedeltà. I Posy originali della gioielleria inglese riportavano all’interno del gambo incisioni, parole d’amore o frasi celebrative di un’amicizia. I Posy di Clarissa incrociano la tradizione inglese con quella di un altro paese: l’Africa. In Liberia (al contrario di quanto ci suggerisca il nome dello Stato che sembra ispirato alla parola “Libertà”) ad esempio gli anelli di fidanzamento avevano la forma di due code di rondine che si toccano alle estremità. L’anello con i suoi 4 vertici, due in alto e due in basso, non rappresenta solo un semplice motivo etnico a zig zag, ma funge da monito: quando si stringe il pugno ricorda infatti a chi li indossa, “pungendolo”, di essere legato indissolubilmente (o quasi..) a qualcuno.

The triptych refers to the ancient rings known as ‘posies’, which were given in groups of two or three to friends or lovers as a sign of fidelity. The original posies from English jewellery featured engravings, words of love or phrases celebrating friendship on the inside of the band. Clarissa's posy rings combine English tradition with that of another country: Africa. In Liberia (contrary to what the name of the state suggests, which seems to be inspired by the word ‘freedom’), for example, engagement rings were shaped like two swallow tails touching at the ends. The ring with its four corners, two at the top and two at the bottom, is not just a simple ethnic zigzag pattern, but serves as a warning: when the wearer clenches their fist, it “pricks” them, reminding them that they are inextricably (or almost inextricably) bound to someone.
